Although built on the site of the ancient Hasmonean dynasty capital, it was in 1993 that the modern city of Modiin (or Modi'in) was founded during the premiership of Yitzhak Rabin. This makes it the youngest city in Israel. The renowned architect Moshe Safdie designed the layout of this 'planned city', and ensured that greenspaces comprised of 50% of the layout. This is one of the many features that make Modi'in-Maccabim-Re'ut an ideal city for families. Transportation is another of the great advantages of Modiin. Situated midway between between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, the city within easy reach of both, yet benefits from being away from those bigger metropolises. The city is the terminus on the new Nahariya - Modi'in inter-city train line, but an extension is expected to be built to Jerusalem soon.
